With Jake Fraser-McGurk’s quick innings of 41 runs off 18 balls, Australia managed to defeat the West Indies by eight wickets in a nail-biting end to
their One Day International series in Canberra on Tuesday, requiring only 6.5 overs to chase the target.
Highlights of the match
The host team secured the series with victories in the first game in Melbourne by eight wickets and the second game in Sydney by 83 runs, where the West Indies played with pride. However, Australia’s captain Steve Smith won the toss and sent them to bat first. Due to the absence of Josh Hazlewood, Pat
Cummins, and Mitchell Starc, they were bowled out for 86 runs in the 25th over.
In response, Australia, with 259 balls remaining, made the necessary runs for the Caribbean team’s impressive commitment. Explosive 21-year-old opener Fraser-McGurk showcased his exceptional talent with a rapid innings of 41 runs in his second match, including five fours and three sixes, before falling to
Alzarri Joseph’s delivery.
Aaron Hardie was the only other wicket to fall, getting out for two runs on Oshane Thomas’ delivery. Josh Inglis scored an unbeaten 35 runs, while Smith
added six runs before being dismissed.
Earlier, fast bowler Xavier Bartlett claimed impressive figures of 4-21 in his debut match in Melbourne. His fellow pacer, Lannce Morris, took a score of
2-13 before leaving the field due to a side strain. Bartlett made an impact early on by dismissing Kjorn Ottley for eight runs, leaving the West Indies
struggling at 36 for 3 in the initial 10 overs.
Their partnership ended when Morris brought about his first international wicket, dismissing Marnus Labuschagne with a stunning diving catch at point. Captain Shai Hope needed a big score, but he was dismissed by Morris, and Elbida Wicket fell for just five balls on Abbott’s delivery, leaving the guest
team in trouble at 43-3.
Debutant Teddy Bishop departed quickly for a duck, as Morris’s rapid delivery collided with the middle stump before he went out of the field during his fifth over. Athanaze scored 32 runs in 60 balls, and then, trying to sweep Adam Zampa’s delivery, he mistimed it, and Abbott easily caught it.
Three more wickets in quick succession put the West Indies in a difficult position. Romario Shepherd was out on a golden duck to Bartlett’s ball, and after a comical mix-up with Matthew Ford Royston Chase, he was run out. Bartlett then took two more wickets to clear the tail.
